Pronunciation is important! You never want to mispronounce anything, ever. It can totally interrupt a conversation. Usually, before you even try to pronounce something you’re not sure about, the best thing to do is ask someone else. Or maybe just Google, duh! However, there are times when people can be too proud to do such a thing, so they will try to say it and fail miserably because they said it was just plain wrong. Massachusetts happens to have more than a few often mispronounced cities and towns.

When you mispronounce something, not only does it accentuate someone’s lack of personal knowledge of what they might be talking about, it doesn’t say much about your general knowledge. Before moving here for my current job here in the Berkshires, I confess, I didn’t know how to pronounce “Berkshires”. The first time I said it was like “Burk-shy-urs”. Obviously that’s wrong and I looked like an idiot. A complete moron!

Since being corrected on this, I’ve definitely learned that even if I think I know how something is pronounced, the best thing to do is ask or Google, as I mentioned before.
