107 fully vaccinated mainers contracted COVID-19

They are called “revolutionary COVID-19 infections”, but what exactly does that mean? According to WABI TV 5, a breakthrough COVID infection occurs when a person contracts COVID-19 after receiving their two Moderna or Pfizer injections, or the single Johnson & Johnson injection, and at least two weeks have passed since receiving of the complete vaccine.

While the number of breakthrough infections is relatively very low compared to the total number of new cases in Maine, this is something that Dr. Shah and the Maine CDC are currently tracking. Of the 107 fully vaccinated Mainers who contracted the virus, one has died. It is important to note that the only person who died was already in hospice care before contracting the virus.

According to Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, that doesn’t mean vaccines are ineffective. He said during a CDC update,

“Very, very few hospitalizations. Much less than one would expect in an unvaccinated cohort of 107 people. Positive proof there of course that the vaccine works very, very well. Even though people may have contracted COVID at times, again 99.9998% did not. Even among those who have made very, very light cases. “
