15 hotel openings in 2021 to teleport you far from here

There is no place like home, but when you go through semi-confinement month after month, there is no place like far from home either. Here are some of the more exciting hotel openings in 2021 (many of which are yet to come).

As we track down the Insta stories of our friends abroad and their summer antics, there’s no shame in having a little travel FOMO. While the pandemic is far from over, many new hotels have opened around the world and many more plan to open before the end of the year. Ever avid planners, here we’ve put together a list of some of the most exciting new hotel openings in 2021, ready to park on our must-see list once travel is safe again. Whether locally in Hua Hin, Khao Yai and Samui, or further afield in Dubai, Paris or New York, there is a little something for every soul seeking travel. Looked.

NB: We have taken note of the current openness of each of these hotels, but given the current COVID-19 situation and its limitations, it is likely that they are subject to change.

While The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is slated to open in the capital in 2022, this year we look forward to the opening of The Standard, Hua Hin. Set in lush green gardens a short walk from the beach, the hotel will feature 199 rooms, suites and villas, as well as various restaurants and a spa. Bringing its young and fun energy to the beach town, we are very excited about this first outpost in Thailand.

Bill Bensley fans rejoice: The award-winning architect and interior designer is bringing his magic to the new InterContinental Khao Yai National Park this year. Set on a 100-acre site with over 50,000 trees and views of seven (!) Lakes, the 45-room luxury hotel is poised to be a highly grammable marvel. Inspired by the history of trains in the region, guests will also be able to explore the 19 repurposed heritage train car suites for an even more special experience.

The Hyatt Regency Koh Samui opened earlier in July as the island’s first Hyatt property. The 140-room, avant-garde design resort is located on a private coastline in North Chaweng and is just 10 minutes from the airport. Keeping modern trends in mind, the resort has made its ‘Galerie des Eight’ a central highlight, showcasing the eight most photogenic sites scattered around the property. For those looking for some very quaint memories, from the private villa to the coastal scenery, this is the one for you.

While Bangkok city dwellers are familiar with stays at the Kimpton Maa-Lai, the Kimpton brand is also working on another property in Koh Samui. Scheduled to open at the end of this year, the 138-room luxury boutique hotel will be located on Choengmon Beach and will primarily consist of suites and villas with pools. With direct beach access and close proximity to Chaweng Beach and the Fishing Village, we can’t wait to see how the town’s millennial Kimpton charm translates to the island.

Last June, Kuda Villingili Resort joined the repertoire of dreamy and paradisiacal Maldives resorts, located on its own private island in the North Male Atoll. A 30-minute speedboat ride from the airport, the resort offers a range of villas (yes, those types of overwater boats, too) and an interesting range of fine dining options. The most famous is that it offers privileged access to Chickens Break, one of the ten best surf spots in the world. If you love water sports this is a great place to get some exercise and then come back and relax in style.

Did you know that the W Osaka is the first outpost of the W Hotel brand in Japan? Beginning along bustling Midosuji Boulevard in early March, the hotel brings together the cityscape in its bold and lively way. With 337 rooms and suites, highlights here include the two bars and four restaurants – particularly the OH.LALA bistro-diner, which is run in partnership with Chef Yusuke Takada, one of the top chefs of the 50 best restaurants in the world. ‘Asia. For those who know that a trip to Japan isn’t complete without a lot of food, you know where to go.

Two new W hotels will open in China: one in the natural port city of Xiamen and another in the “star city” of Changsha. While W Xiamen is an urban beachfront hotel adjacent to OneMall, W Changsha aims to bring together the legacy and history of the infamous starry sky here. While the two destinations weren’t the ones that were previously on your travel list radar, we’re seeing some promising renderings for two future hotspots in less popular cities.

The Raffles brand is opening four new hotels this year, and the Raffles Udaipur is one of them. While Udaipur has long been a dream destination for many, Raffles Udaipur is likely to deepen the fairytale on its private 21-acre island on Lake Udai Sagar. Surrounded by rolling hills and with a view of a 400-year-old temple in the background, the 101-room property (each with a private plunge pool) exudes opulence and history around every corner.

The first Raffles resort on the Palm Jumeirah, you can imagine what awaits you at Raffles The Palm Dubai. Located on the western crescent of the world’s largest man-man island, the hotel will feature 389 luxury guest rooms, suites and villas, each with stunning sea views. There will also be eight bar and restaurant concepts, and plenty of gold accents, we’re sure.

After three years of major renovations, the Mandarin Oriental Ritz is finally reopening its grand doors in Madrid’s historic “Golden Triangle of Art”. Located opposite the infamous Prado in the heart of Madrid’s shopping district, its prime location is just one of the highlights. Parisian designers Gilles & Boissier have taken over the design of the 100 rooms and 53 suites here, bringing together the hotel’s historic link with the city, Spanish culture and Spanish art. Spirited and sophisticated, we’d say it was worth the wait.

Do you miss London like we miss London? Embracing London across its London, The NoMad opened earlier this year in the heart of Covent Garden. Located in a formerly (and famous) historic building known as the Bow Street Magistrates’ Court and Police Station, we love that NoMad has always managed to incorporate its New York spirit into its design. The work of design studio Roman and Williams, there is a real influence in each of the rooms, drawing on the connections between London and New York as cultural and artistic cities.

Another chic hotel should honor the French capital. Celebrate the French Art of living, the Cheval Blanc Paris is a contemporary and urban haven, composed of 26 rooms and 46 suites, and housing 4 restaurants. Do not miss the Spa Dior, which will offer six treatment rooms for “tailor-made rituals”, as well as Le Carrousel, the signature Cheval Blanc Maison space dedicated to children. Fans who know the brand will know and nod their heads.

We wish we could be taken to Saint-Barth. Aimed to open this October 18, the Rosewood Le Guanahani is nestled among bougainvillea, hibiscus and lush palms of St. Barts, overlooking a sprawling beach and reef-protected lagoon. The boutique resort will feature guest cabins along garden paths, as well as two swimming pools, a Rosewood spa, and an array of water and land activities to indulge in. Island life at its best.

While waiting for the unveiling of Aman Bangkok, we turn to Aman New York for some inspiration. Still to open, the new urban sanctuary will be located in the heart of Manhattan in the Crown Building at the corner of Firth Avenue and 57th Street. The first house of the Museum of Modern Art (!) Will celebrate Aman’s philosophy through the vision of Jean-Michel Gathy and its 83 hotel rooms, restaurants, garden-terrace, bar, private club, spa, club of jazz and wine cellar. On the upper floors there will also be 22 Aman private residences. A rebirth of the most special kind.

Located in an eclectic and exciting restaurant and fashion district, W Melbourne opened earlier in February, with the aim of bringing the community’s emerging music scene to life. We couldn’t think of a better place to do it, between the vibe-y interior design (but also inspired by history), to the fun restaurants and bars. The hotel has 294 rooms and 29 suites, and highlights include state-of-the-art fitness facilities, gold-roofed indoor pool, poolside bar and DJ booth. Looks like they really know how to have a good time. We cannot wait.
