Two young children have died and a baby is being treated in a hospital after being found unconscious with “obvious signs of trauma” in a Massachusetts home, authorities said.
The the children were found after a man who lived at the house called 911 to report a resident had attempted suicide and jumped out of a window around 6.10pm on January 24 in Duxbury, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney , Timothy J. Cruz, who spoke at a press conference broadcast by CBS Boston and local media.
Cruz said the woman, who was taken to hospital for treatment, appeared to be the children’s mother and everyone inside the house was likely related.
Inside the home, authorities found an unconscious 5-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a baby about 8 months old, according to Cruz. He said the girl and boy were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The baby was airlifted to a Boston hospital and is being treated, Cruz told the conference.
He called the incident “an unimaginable senseless tragedy”.
The investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been named.
Duxbury Police Chief Michael Carbone assured the community it was “an isolated incident and there is no longer a threat”.
“When we have more answers, we’ll let you know,” Carbone said.
Carbone added that officers who responded to the incident are “well” and have been temporarily removed from duty.
In a statement on Twitter, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office called the case “really awful scene” and wrote that he keeps those who answered in their thoughts.
McClatchy News contacted Duxbury Police Department for further information on January 25 and was awaiting a response.
Duxbury is about 35 miles southeast of Boston.
