$789 million plan announced for new Royal BC Museum

If you’re hoping to visit the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, you only have until September to do so! After that, it will be at least a few years before you discover the new. Here’s a quick overview.

Today, the provincial government of British Columbia unveiled a major new project for the museum. While part of the goal remains the same, the development of the new museum is one of the first of its size “that partners with local First Nations on the project team”. This will be seen in the “design influence” of the Lekwungen peoples, as well as the inclusion of members of the Songhees Nation and the Esquimalt Nation.

The estimated cost? A nice sum of $789 million, which will come entirely from the province. Of course, the project is still in its infancy… and a “new modernized provincial museum” will not see the light of day until around 2030. In the meantime, the current museum will organize “traveling exhibitions, regional satellites and a interactive walking tour in Victoria” between the closure of the current space and the arrival of the new one.

Additionally, the IMAX theater, as well as the gift shop and food trucks around the museum, will remain open until “early 2023,” when that will eventually be.

Well, it looks like the new Vancouver Art Gallery might have a little competition for the province’s top cultural destination! We like this idea. If you’re hoping to hear more about plans for a new Royal BC Museum, you can check out the official press release to the right here.
