Maybe you had a job before you graduated, just wanted a last summer break, or you’re still looking for that perfect job. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fresh graduate or just looking for a new place to live, here are the reasons why I fell in love with Birmingham and why I think you will too.

1. The community

First and foremost, let’s give it to The Magic City community. Sweet southern charm got me, y’all. With people, businesses and organizations working together to be better neighbors and to help Birmingham be the best it can be, you really can’t find a more meaningful community.

2. The best growing culinary scene

Was living near a Taco Mama non-negotiable for me? I can’t even be embarrassed by this fact, it’s so good! It doesn’t matter if you want casual dining, food trucks, or a fancy sit-down dinner, The Magic City has it all. Plus, it’s all the best – we’ve even just seen a chef from Birmingham win the James Beard Best Chef of the South. Here are some guides to help you find your favorite spots:

Name a better way to relax on a summer evening, watch Saturday football or try to win a trivia game with friends than at a local beer hall. Fortunately, Bham has so many choices. back forty‘s Bama Mosa may hold my heart, but here are some of the other breweries in Magic City:

If beer isn’t really your thing, luckily Birmingham has plenty of bars to choose from, including fun rooftop bars with great views of the city.

8. Proximity for weekend getaways

But with such a beautiful skyline, why would you really want to leave? (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

Whether returning to my hometown of Knoxville, TN, or taking a weekend getaway to the beach, Atlanta or Nashville, Birmingham is a focal point on the map. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to save money on gas and plane tickets with short trips? Weekend getaways can include:

  • gulf coasts
  • mentone
  • Mobile
  • Tishomingo County, Mississippi
  • Tupelo
  • Oxford
