The majority of respondents want the legalization of short-term rentals for the North Shore

For the most part, short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO are not allowed in any of the North Shore municipalities, but enforcement of the rules is rare to non-existent.

As the tourism industry prepares for a comeback and the housing crisis continues unabated, North Shore News challenged readers with the following question: What should the North Shore do with short-term rentals like Airbnb?

The survey was conducted from March 16 to April 1. Of the 1,622 votes, we can determine that 662 are from the community. The full results are as follows:

Find them and close them. They aggravate the housing crisis. 21.15% local, 26.5% total

Make rules to legalize and regulate them, with business licenses and zoning rules. 57.85% local, 51.66% overall

Leave them alone. We need more tourist accommodation. 21.00% local, 21.82% overall

Local Total

The findings are based on an online survey of North Shore News adult readers located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error – which measures the variability of the sample – is +/- 2.42%, 19 times out of 20.
