A couple with the dream of a Grand Designs house for the old Devon reservoir put a property up for auction
An old tank in East Devon that has been described as being like a ‘Teletubbies’ house is set to be auctioned online after a couple’s Grand Design dreams did not come true.
The Old Reservoir at Ridgeway Lane, Colyton offers an exciting opportunity to create a three to four bedroom Grand Designs style property from an old southwest water reservoir.
The property has planning permission for conversion into a family home.

Approved plans show a semi-open kitchen, dining and living room with an incredible curved barrel ceiling and large glazed windows at the east end of the property.
There are also three bedrooms, an office or a fourth bedroom, a private bathroom and a family bathroom, as well as a separate cloakroom.
Only one of the bedrooms in this unique property will have windows facing the west end of the house.
The rest of the house, which has been affectionately dubbed a ‘sophisticated Teletubbies home’ by current owners Mr. and Mrs. Hills, will be lit by 11 skylights carved into the ceiling.
Ms Hills said: “It’s a lot lighter than you might think. We bought the tank when it was completely buried. We did the very hard work of digging it out to reveal the structure that was under the ground.
“We opened up the front so you can see inside and did a lot of diamond drilling for the roof lights to come in and to make doors inside and we removed the floor. It’s an empty shell that just needs to be completed.
Believed to be 100 years old, The Old Reservoir was made from local pebbles and was the original water source built for the town of Colyton.
With an on-site spring that once supplied the town’s water supply, the property has its own water source – one of the many reasons it has stood out for Mr. and Mrs. Hills.
“It was supposed to be our Grand Designs home,” Ms. Hills said.
“Unfortunately for us, it didn’t work. We have come this far but had neither the time nor the money to continue.
“It’s a shame because the concept is absolutely brilliant. These are the ecological references that seduced us. It will have a green roof and due to its thick walls it should retain heat.
“In the end, it will take very little to maintain it and your bills will be really low to minimal. It takes courage but I think that with what we have already done, the potential is there to see.
“He is looking for someone to complete this project and create this house which must again disappear into the landscape.”
Be marketed by Greenslade Taylor Hunt in Honiton at a indicative price of £ 195,000, The Old Reservoir enjoys a stunning rural location along a quiet dead end road but within walking distance of Colyton.
The property’s 0.13 acre site offers plenty of opportunities to create parking and turning space up front as well as a sunken garden at the end of the two reservoirs.
The roof of the property – where you can enjoy incredible rural views over the Ax Valley – will be the main area of the garden.
Once complete, the property could become a fantastic family home, a great vacation home, or an original Airbnb.
While this type of real estate project might not be for everyone, Ms Hills said the interesting concept and green ideas of The Old Reservior with fewer bills to pay would be very appealing to most people.
She said: “It is quite a large dwelling and it should be celebrated for what it is. It should make a good house.
“The barred vaulted ceilings are really interesting and you can imagine the glass doors on the front as you enter the house – it’s like a sophisticated Teletubby house.
“I hope someone else will take care of it and do what we planned to do with it.”
The Old Reservoir is for sale online with Greenslade Taylor Hunt.
The auction will end at noon on October 1.
