Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky lists his spare room on the rental site, but there’s a catch

Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky has opened his home in San Francisco, allowing guests to stay in a private room with ‘scenic views’ – but the only problem is there are no dates available.

Mr. Chesky, who founded the company in 2008 and has an estimated net worth of nearly $12 billion, recently registered his “Carefully crafted suite” as part of a promotion to encourage more people to rent out their spare rooms on the platform to earn extra cash amid a cost of living crisis.

“Stay with me – Airbnb’s co-founder and first host. At the time, my roommate Joe and I blew up air mattresses and hosted three guests — Michael, Kat and Amol,” he said. written in the list.

“This time I’ve gone from airbeds to a guest suite in my home. You’ll spend time with me and Sophie, my golden retriever, as I share stories from the early days – or you can relax in your suite, decorated with some of my favorite pieces from Airbnb history.”

He said guests will have access to a full bathroom with a large shower and can also use the “spacious chef’s kitchen” or relax in the “sunny living room with floor-to-ceiling windows.”

However, it has since been mocked for the publicity stunt, as many have found there are no dates available until October 2024, when the staycation period ends.

“Another PR stunt Brian, no availability at zero price. You have delivered something unattainable yet again,” one annoyed Twitter user wrote.

‘No slots available until 2024,’ said another.

But the 41-year-old was quick to close comments explaining on his Instagram that he had “a few weekends away in January, February and March, but they booked before I even posted that.”

“[But] I will continue to add weekends throughout the year,” he said.

While some called the list “incredible” in thanks for opening his home to strangers, others were annoyed they missed out as available slots appeared to have been booked.

“Sounds great but there’s no availability for all of 2023 and beyond based on looks?” one person tweeted, to which Mr Chesky assured he would “add more weekends soon”.

Some people are so eager to stay in the ownership of the tech billionaire that they are even ready to buy it.

“Anyone with a slot machine ready to sell?” one person asked.

“If you get some let me know I might buy it even for 69x,” another added.

Mr. Chesky explained that when guests arrive at his San Francisco property, they will be treated to “Chesky Chip Cookies” upon arrival.

“You will be served six cups of coffee before noon (just like me),” he tweeted.

“We’re going to work together and train until total muscle failure (after eating a lot of cookies),” he added alongside a shot of a gym.

He explained that his home is located near the Mission, Castro, and Noe Valley neighborhoods with “plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes.”

“You’ll be steps away from beautiful Dolores Park, Bi-Rite Ice Cream, and the famous Tartine Bakery for fresh bread and pastries. Also, guests must like dogs. Or at least Sophia.

Meanwhile, even hip-hop mogul and sneaker connoisseur DJ Khaled will open the doors to a recreation of his iconic, viral sneaker closet for just $10.62 a night.

The reservation opens the Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. EST.

“Sneakers have always held a MAJOR place in my life. Now, in honor of my upcoming We The Best Air Jordan 5 collection, I’m grateful for the opportunity to invite guests to throw it into my kingdom. of sneakers, DJ Khaled said in his listing.

He said guests will be able to sleep in his “legendary” sneaker collection.

“During the stay, guests will have the chance to experience and breathe Miami the way I do – in an epic way. I’m rolling out all the big stops, including an exclusive pair of We The Best Air Jordan 5s, a handwritten welcome from me upon arrival and the keys to the ultimate sneaker realm, sleeping amidst some of my most treasured kicks.

The two listings are part of the company’s winter promotions after it revealed on Wednesday that it saw a “disproportionate” 31% increase in single room listings in the third quarter as more and more people were looking for additional income in the face of a cost of living. crisis.

According to Reuters, the company said property listings had increased in all regions, without disclosing specific numbers, and to help growth it unveiled an app update on Wednesday to help with the process.

“We’ve seen a lot of people more interested than before in housing to cover their cost of living,” Chesky said, as high inflation due to war in Ukraine puts pressure on fragile household budgets.

Reuters reported that around 46% of hosts on Airbnb said they used extra money from property rentals to pay for food and other items, while one in 10 said it helped them avoid an eviction or foreclosure, Airbnb said, citing an investigation.

Some popular tourist destinations, however, have accused the company of worsening housing shortages as landlords increasingly let properties to holidaymakers amid a surge in travel, rather than opting for long-term tenants . Airbnb co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk in an interview with Reuters blamed rising interest rates for creating a shortage of new homes, adding that it has also been difficult for the industry to s adapt to buyers who are increasingly looking for accommodation outside the big cities.

Meanwhile, the company said longer customer stays due to remote working will continue to boost results as travel demand shows no signs of slowing despite economic headwinds.
