Airbnb cracks down on ‘party houses’ in Arizona

The move comes as the company creates more measures to tackle large gatherings in its listings during the pandemic.

ARIZONA, United States — A new crackdown in the rental world comes as vacation rental company Airbnb scrambles to protect people and property from disastrous holidays.

While the “no party policy” isn’t new, the sweeping enforcement is, and 50 local listings have since been taken down because of it. Airbnb has suspended or terminated these rentals, all in an effort to protect you and the renter, and to respect neighbors like Masada Siegel who operates the revolving door.

“It’s every weekend, a whole new group of people show up and they go to town and they have a great party but they don’t realize it’s a neighborhood where families live,” he said. she told 12News.

Siegel lived in Scottsdale at two different times in his life. After moving to New York, she’s the first to tell you that she’s in for a good party, but repeat offenders need to go.

“People show up with party buses and marijuana seeping into the yard and beer I mean the whole place stunk half the time I didn’t sign up to live next door ‘a house of fraternity,’ she added.

The listings have all previously received complaints or otherwise violated the company’s policies on parties and events, the company said in a press release.

“We took a closer look at Arizona and looked for ways to more proactively enforce our no-party policy in a much more drastic way,” Airbnb representative Ben Breit said.

As a result, 50 listings across Arizona are no longer available, and Breit says that’s just the beginning.

The company previously banned party homes as part of its Trust Innovation program last December, which sought to build “trust both among our own community of hosts and guests and in the communities in which we operate,” the company says on its website.

“We really hope that by sharing this, more neighbors will be aware that we have this 24/7 helpline, and if there are more issues to be resolved, we want to hear about it” , he added.

Those are words of relief for residents like Siegel, whose family chose this neighborhood years ago with the American dream in mind.

“We found a repairman, we wanted to make our own house and have a quiet place to live, but basically because it’s a family neighborhood,” she said.

The 50 suspensions were reportedly communicated to hosts last Friday and were enacted throughout the weekend, Airbnb said.

The suspensions affected registrations in the following cities:

  • Antler Crest Estates
  • Bisbee
  • Chandler
  • Flag
  • Lake Havasu City
  • Mesa
  • Phoenix
  • Scottsdale
  • Sedona
  • Surprise
  • temple
  • Tucson

The company has added several other “anti-party initiatives” to its policies, including placing restrictions on guests under the age of 25 not allowing them to book a one-night reservation on the same listing on weekends. next end.
