Airbnb globally bans one-night NYE bookings to limit rowdy parties

If you were planning on booking an Airbnb for a night to party on New Year’s Eve, think again.

The short-stay platform has enforced new rules globally that will see some customers banned from booking a property for one night only on December 31 to prevent parties.

Anti-party restrictions will be in effect over New Year’s weekend in 11 countries, including Australia, the United States, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, France and Spain.

Last year, Airbnb said approximately 340,000 guests worldwide were blocked or redirected from trying to book on Airbnb through NYE, including more than 120,000 guests in the US, more than 34,500 guests in the UK United and nearly 13,000 guests in Australia.

In a statement Posted on Thursday, Airbnb said that while the overwhelming majority of guests are respectful neighbors and travelers, it’s also committed to reducing instances of unauthorized parties — which escalated Dec. 31.

“To this end, we are introducing restrictions on certain types of bookings over New Year’s Eve,” the statement said.

“These restrictions will see a ban on one-night bookings of entire home listings for customers with no positive account history – or no previous bookings – on the platform.”

It also introduces tighter restrictions for the same customers trying to book two- and three-night bookings, with a focus on local booking attempts.

“These proactive defenses will help promote responsible travel and prevent rare instances of unwanted behavior, and allow hosts, guests and communities to enjoy their holiday celebrations with added confidence.”

The enhanced rules are rolling out after a successful trial last year, Airbnb said.

“This broader rollout follows the successful trial of these automated defenses in eight countries during NYE last year as part of our efforts to help enforce our global ban on parties, which we have further codified. early this summer,” he said.

“We estimate the measures have contributed to a global year-over-year decline in NYE party incident rates of approximately 56%, since the defenses were first tested in 2020.”

It has also launched reservation filtering technology, which blocks certain reservations that pose an increased risk of disruptive parties and property damage and hosts can also get a free noise sensor.
