Airbnb launches $ 8 million athlete travel grant to sponsor athletes

Around the world: Airbnb launched its Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant to support travel and accommodation for Olympians and Paralympians over the next eight years.

Supported by the International Olympic Committee [IOC], the Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant is expected to raise approximately $ 8 million in direct support to athletes for their travel, accommodation and training. In total, the grant will cover five Olympic and Paralympic Games and has already raised $ 40 million in sponsorship for athletes.

Airbnb partnered with the IOC in 2019, becoming the 14e member of the TOP program, the highest level of Olympic sponsorship which grants its group of global partners exclusive marketing rights for the Summer, Winter and Youth Olympic Games.

The Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant will continue the investment the company made in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, following the launch of the Olympic and Paralympic experiences in 2020. The program has enabled athletes to generate income while sharing their experience and their passion for their sport with guests via the Airbnb Experiences platform. Thanks to this partnership, all Olympians and Paralympians who compete will receive $ 500 in Airbnb promotional credit to celebrate their accomplishment.

Catherine Powell, Head of Accommodation at Airbnb, said: “Our work with the International Olympic Committee is focused on dedicated support to the individual athletes who are at the center of the Olympic and Paralympic movement. With thousands of athletes already using Airbnb for travel needs related to training, qualifying and competing, this new program will provide much needed additional economic support. “

Beginning of Airbnb’s partnership with the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees [IOC and IPC] was delayed after the Tokyo 2020 Games were postponed to this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Applications for the 2021 Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant are now open to all athletes, Olympians and Paralympians, and will close on May 14, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. For more information visit the website here.
