Airbnb launches non-profit organization for crisis hosting

Airbnb is launching initiative to help provide housing for people responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and other emergencies.

SAN FRANCISCO ซ Airbnb has created a non-profit organization aimed at helping emergency responders find housing in times of crisis, such as now with the pandemic.

The new Airbnb.org was announced on Monday as a partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) to support housing for workers and volunteers battling Covid-19 crisis and other types of emergencies.

“Founding and supporting Airbnb.org allows us to redouble our efforts to help communities in need around the world in coordination with our partners,” said Joe Gebbia, Airbnb Co-Founder and President of Airbnb.org .

Airbnb.org’s initial pledges include $ 2 million to support the efforts. Over the next two years, Airbnb.org will commit $ 1 million to cover stays for staff and volunteers who support communities around the world affected by humanitarian disasters.

CORE will use Airbnb.org’s $ 1 million contribution to fund stays for frontline workers administering free Covid-19 tests, performing contact tracing, providing flu shots and coordinating support for the quarantine in 10 cities in the United States, according to a statement.

Airbnb has pledged 400,000 of its shares to support efforts upstream of the initial public offering of the home sharing platform.

Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nate Blecharczyk pledge $ 6 million into the program

Airbnb.org will allow hosts on Airbnb to offer free and discounted stays to people affected by emergencies, including natural disasters and the pandemic.

Hosts who support the program will receive a special badge on their profile to recognize their support.
