Airbus signs MoU for Aircraft Lifecycle Service Center in China
(Jan 24, 2022)
Airbus has signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Chengdu and Tarmac Aerosave for the development of the first sustainable aircraft lifecycle service center in China.
The MOU covers a range of activities from aircraft parking and storage to maintenance, upgrade, conversion, dismantling and recycling services for various types of aircraft.
Services will include aircraft parking and storage, maintenance, upgrades, conversions, dismantling and recycling of various types of aircraft.
Tarmac Aerosave will bring to the project its 15 years of expertise in the eco-efficient dismantling of aircraft. Located in the same center, the Airbus subsidiary Satair will acquire aging aircraft, market and distribute the resulting used parts to complete the life cycle service package. The facility will cover an area of 690,000 square meters and a storage capacity of 125 aircraft.
“This is another concrete contribution to the aviation industry’s quest for sustainability, supporting the principle of a circular economy in line with Airbus’ aim to pioneer sustainable aerospace. This unique center will support the expansion of Airbus aviation services while enabling the implementation of China’s green industry strategy,” said Klaus Roewe, SVP Airbus Customer Services. “The phasing out of aircraft in China is expected to grow exponentially over the next 20 years. Airbus is committed to investing in the region and this one-stop-shop – a first in China and outside Europe – will position Airbus well in the Chinese market for second-life services for aircraft.
A formal agreement to establish and frame this industrial cooperation should be signed between the partners in mid-2022, with entry into service of the new center scheduled for the end of 2023, subject to the relevant regulatory approvals.
