All the reasons why you should have a passport, even if you are not traveling abroad
Passports are not only a key to international freedom, they are also a viable form of identity that you may not even know you need.
Passports are not something that many of us think about on a daily basis, weekly basis, or even throughout the year. In a digital world, it’s hard to believe that a little book can give a person so much freedom; however, in the world of international travel, it is possible. However, crossing borders is not the only reason for having this form of identification. A passport book and even a passport card (which is the “light” passport, so to speak) is a viable form of identification and might even save you stress in the future just by having one.
Usually, a person never knows when they will need to present more than one form of evidence to prove that they are who they say they are. Since it was a bit of a tongue twister, in short: a passport is something that everyone should have, especially as adults, and especially for parents.
In the event of loss of identity, it is a viable form of identification
Believe it or not, a passport works like a piece of identification similar to that of a driver’s license. While a passport does not prove that a person can drive legally, it will prove that they are who they say they are. Since it also features a photo as well as a person’s birthday, it can be used somewhat interchangeably in many situations where a driver’s license would be sufficient, such as showing proof of legal age. Therefore, while it is highly unlikely that someone will forget their driver’s license but have their passport, it still works to get them into this coveted club.
It serves as a precautionary measure
In the event that a family member or friend goes abroad and needs help, how would it be done without a passport? The point is, you can never guess when the need for a passport will arise or when crossing the borders of another country will become a necessity.
While this is a highly unlikely situation and it seems like it can’t happen, it’s usually the first thing a person thinks about before anything. Is to arrive. And, if so, it’s better to be prepared with a passport than to wait six weeks to get one.
A method of protecting children
For parents, the idea of a child being registered with a passport they haven’t applied for is frightening. In the United States, a passport can only be requested once by a person or relative, which automatically prohibits anyone from doing so with the same name. While it’s not something that many people think they are doing, getting a passport for your child at an early age can not only serve as a strong form of identification, but will also prevent anyone from doing it. It also means that a child cannot leave the country with the passport that was obtained by his parent or guardian, so it is a guarantee in all respects.
You may need it for domestic flights
While it is not necessary to have a passport for domestic flights in most cases, it is still a good thing to have. In the event of loss of identification or additional questioning, being able to show a passport will prove a multitude of things.
Basically, a passport is the end and essential of the world of travel; it will answer many questions without the security personnel even needing to ask them. There are also cases where a person’s driver’s license or other piece of identification will simply not be sufficient for a flight to another state, in which case a passport is the best thing to do.
Border crossings are much easier
For border crossings crossed by car, most people use what is called an enhanced permit. This allows them to cross borders that touch the United States – both Mexico and Canada – depending on the state in which a person lives. For example, all states that share a border with Canada allow an enhanced license for an additional fee at the DMV so that possession of a passport is not required. However, a passport is consistent and allows international travel of all genre, with more information than an enhanced license will have.
Other things such as employment papers or schools might require it
Although rare, some forms of employment may require more than one form of identification. Not everyone has their birth certificate on them, which unfortunately means that is no piece of ID. A passport is easy to carry, serves as a legal ID, and absolutely can be used to fill out employment or school papers, or any other legal document that requires ID.
