Arrests made in Birmingham, shooting of 9-year-old girl

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – Birmingham Police Department have arrested two suspects in connection with a Friday night shooting that injured a man and a 9-year-old girl.

According to the BPD, Jonathan Ellington, 21, was arrested after detectives obtained two warrants for attempted murder. The other suspect, Honijah Fletcher, 22, was arrested on two warrants for attempted murder and one warrant for discharging a firearm. The suspects are from Birmingham.

The BPD reported that the shooting happened at the Sun Inn. The department said with the assistance of the Real Time Crime Center, the suspect vehicle was seen entering Kimbrough Homes shortly after the shooting. Ellington was taken into custody after the BPD West Precinct task force responded to the area and briefly pursued him on foot.

The BPD noted that investigative leads led officers to the 1600 block of 52nd Street Ensley. There, Fletcher was arrested. The suspects were held in custody for 48 hours at Birmingham Jail.

Detectives obtained warrants for the suspects after presenting information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Ellington and Fletcher will be held in Jefferson County Jail without bond.

The BPD mentioned Friday night that the shot girl had life-threatening conditions, but did not provide an update on her status.
