Oakland News Now – Birds of Lake Merritt book launch, featuring author Alex Harris – video made by YouTube channel in upper left corner of video.

Author-illustrator Alex Harris presents his new book: Birds of Lake Merritt, a richly illustrated bird guide to the country’s first official wildlife refuge.
This charming, full-color field guide introduces us to fifteen waterfowl that are easily found in Oakland’s Lake Merritt Urban Wildlife Refuge. In his introduction, author-illustrator Alex Harris includes a history of the lake, providing the context for a place that attracts humans and shorebirds.

Each species profile of the lake’s feathered residents is accompanied by a beautiful, detailed watercolor that captures the bird’s distinctive coloring and curvy physicality. The black-crowned night heron, the official bird of the City of Oakland, gazes out with its striking orange eyes, while the American coot flexes its fancy splayed legs. Along with simple notes on identifying each bird, Harris features the voices of members of the Oakland community, sharing moments of fun with the most dedicated bird watchers.

A celebration of avian life and the human pleasure of witnessing it, Birds of Lake Merritt is a must-see guide to nature in the heart of the city.
Alex Harris, born and raised in Berkeley, California, is an artist interested in using art and technology to examine how humans interact with the natural world. He holds a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and previously worked as a Web Editor and Electronic Communications Manager at the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film Archive.
