Blackpool Illuminations 2021 start and end times

The world-famous Blackpool illuminations have been lit for 2021.

The popular light experience is back for another year, with a variety of new facilities, experiences and events on offer.

The illuminations are 10 km long and use over a million bulbs, making for a spectacular light show.

The Switch On 2021 concert took place on September 3rd, with Shirley Ballas having the honor of turning on the lights and performing from stars such as KSI, Ella Henderson and Liverpool legends The Wombats.

This year’s Illuminations also feature all-new light installations, as well as some of the much-loved experiences being transformed for 2021.

The Blackpool Illuminations typically run for 66 nights each year, but this year organizers have extended the duration of the Illuminations, allowing visitors to enjoy the Illuminations during Christmas and New Years.

For the second time in history, Blackpool Illuminations will run through January 2022, for a total of 112 nights.

Start and end times and dates

Blackpool Illuminations 2021 kicked off on September 3 and will run until January 3, 2022.

The lights are on every night, with different times as it starts to get darker faster. From October 24, the lights will be on every day at 5 p.m.

During the week, the lights are off at 10:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday remain on until midnight. On Sunday, the illuminations end at 11 p.m.

Location and travel tips

The Blackpool Illuminations take place on the Fylde Coast and are 10 km long. It starts at Squires Gate and ends at Red Bank Road.

Visitors can experience the illuminations on foot or by car. The organizers recommend walking as traffic can occur during peak periods, especially if you plan to visit during the weekend.

It is also possible to explore the illuminations of Blackpool via one of its illuminated trams. Trams run regularly from Pleasure Beach and go all the way to Bispham, with the option of getting off along the way.

New facilities for 2021

Blackpool Illuminations presented a series of new installations for the 2021 edition.

A new illuminated display has been introduced to the Blackpool Tower, created by Blackpool-born international designer Jack Irving. The Astral Dreams projection is a laser-mapped spectacle, which transforms the Tower into a spectacular light show.

The organizers have introduced a Spiro light tunnel for this year’s Illuminations experience. The tunnel is 26 meters long and offers visitors the opportunity to walk through a fascinating tunnel of light.

Marking the end of the summer period, two giant pixelated beach balls have been installed on the Golden Mile between the RNLI Rescue Hangar and the Comedy Carpet. Each ball is seven meters high and is made up of 7,000 small beach ball lights. The Tower Festival Headland screening trailer has also been transformed into an illuminated sandcastle.

Also at Tower Festival Headland, a giant illuminated sign “I LOVE BPL” was installed. Created by Lightworks, the home of Blackpool Illuminations, the new installation offers the perfect selfie spot.

Pool party

During the October semester, the award-winning Lightpool festival will be returning to Blackpool Illuminations. The free show includes a series of light installations, 3D projections, artistic tours and special live performances.

Blackpool Tower Projections

Blackpool Tower screenings will run throughout the illuminations period. This year’s lineup includes the new Astral Dreams show, Down The Rabbit Hole exploring space, as well as Chasing Stars and Enchanted Blackpool.

Blackpool World Fireworks Championship

The 2021 Blackpool Fireworks World Championship will take place on certain dates to come. The event will take place with a new launch pad on the beach in front of the Blackpool Tower.

The event will open at 7:30 p.m. and the fireworks display is expected to start at 8:30 p.m. Find out more here.
