Catholic Church Turned into Modern Mansion Lists for $4.42 Million

Some may see this as sacrilege – but if you’re feeling particularly spiritual, this could be the home for you.

A 19th-century church that was badly burned in a 2019 fire has been transformed into a modern mansion – and is now up for sale for $4.42million.

Located in the southwest of England, in the seaside resort of Torquay, the Victorian Gothic-style church has been ‘resurrected from its neglected past and transformed into a spectacular 21st century family home’, the listing explains. .

Known as Trinity House, Bristol couple John and Amy Watson bought the church at auction in February 2021 for $113,000.

The Watsons, who work in construction, felt it would be a good renovation project after realizing they needed more space to run around with their five children and five grandchildren.

The church is located in Torquay, England.

“We are restoring it as it should be,” said Amy Devon live at the time, adding that in the midst of cleaning up the abandoned church, they discovered a secret door to the presbytery – known as the priest’s house – and a secret staircase leading to the church tower.

“We didn’t know he was there until we investigated. Everything we find is repaired with love,” Amy said. “We want everyone to be assured that this building is now in good hands.”

“It’s been open to the elements since the fire,” Amy said. “All the soft play equipment was still there and it was infested with rats. The tower under the spire has three levels and we removed eight large pigeon poo dumpsters from a single 4 [meter]-by-4 [meter] level – it was 23 [tons] of bird poo.

Now comprised of five bedrooms and five bathrooms, the iconic home features an open living plan with cathedral ceilings, Gothic arches, tracery and stained glass windows.

Situated along a river, the house church was first built in the 1890s. Before it burned down, it was converted into a former children’s playhouse from 2001 to 2017.

Consisting of three floors, the tower has room for an office and a lounge area and offers a view of the harbour.

The gated estate also includes a garden and plenty of space to host events.
