Cheaper way to rent cars as prices go up

The next time you go on vacation, you could spend a small fortune on renting a car… if you can even manage to find a rental car. During the pandemic, car rental companies began selling cars in their fleets to stay afloat. Now, with rising travel demand, car shortages and skyrocketing prices, it is hitting travelers hard. There is a way to beat the system, with an app called Turo. Think of it like Airbnb, but for cars. Car owners display their personal vehicles on the app for you to rent. They make money and you will save money. For many, the cost of renting on Turo is a fraction of the rental prices we see across the country. How it works? Watch the video above to see our National Chief Consumer Correspondent, Jeff Rossen, test it out for himself. All you have to do is enter where you are going and when you will need the car. Options that you can choose from will then appear. Once you have entered your information and finalized the reservation, you will be in contact with the owner of the car. You can set up a meeting place and pick up the car. It is also possible to have the car delivered to the airport or hotel. As you search, you can set filters to show cars that will be delivered to you directly or to say “free delivery” on the car photo. As you scroll, the app will give you ratings for each car and its owner. It even tells you how many trips the car has made. There are comments from previous renters on the condition of the car and how the rental experience with this car owner went as well. Do you have questions about insurance? Car owners and renters have a choice of three protection plans or they can decline coverage if they have their own auto insurance policy. For car owners, there must be some kind of insurance coverage. Liability insurance is provided by Liberty Mutual secured by Turo Insurance Agency, LLC. For renters, insurance fees may vary depending on the rental and how long you will have it.
