Country snapshot: 89 new hotels lined up for Spain [Infographic]

The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 89 hotel projects are currently under development in Spain, with the capital Madrid experiencing most of the development.

Our researchers are currently tracking 89 hotel projects with a total of 16,518 rooms across Spain, all of which are expected to be completed within the next few years. We take a closer look at these projects and consider which ones you should particularly consider.

Hotel openings in Spain per year

The rest of 2021 is shaping up to be a busy time for the Spanish hotel scene. Some 35 hotels and 5,677 rooms are set to open their doors for the first time this year – 17 of these establishments are already in the pre-opening phase.

By 2022, when Covid-related travel restrictions are hopefully relaxed, another 23 projects with 4,161 rooms are expected to go into service. For 2023, things look a bit calmer, with just 12 launches and 1,967 keys to be added to the market. And 19 other hotel projects and 4,713 rooms are planned for 2024 and beyond.

The split between four and five star hotel developments is almost even – 45 of the properties we track are in the four star segment, while the remaining 44 are in the luxury category.

Main urban growth markets in Spain

Madrid will see 12 projects with 1,926 rooms come to an end in the coming years, making the Spanish capital the most active urban destination in the country.

Meanwhile, Catalonia’s economic powerhouse Barcelona will get eight new hotels with 2,214 keys. And third place goes to the tourist hotspot of Benidorm, which will soon see four properties with 1,260 rooms opening their doors.

Spain’s most dynamic hotel brands

In terms of the most active flags of Spain, Paradores Hoteles takes the lead here with four projects and 241 rooms in preparation.

Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos, for comparison, will only launch three properties, but these will have an impressive total key count of 1,265. Vincci Hoteles will also open three hotels, but with a relatively small number of rooms – 244 per be precise.

The best hotel openings to watch out for

Known for its luxurious golf resorts and beautiful beaches, Marbella will soon be home to another stylish hotel. Operating under the Club Med brand, the Magna Palace will offer 373 rooms and suites with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea from early 2022. The property’s exclusive gourmet restaurant, in addition, will offer panoramic views for guests to enjoy. enjoy before going to the on-site disco or cinema for evening entertainment.

The recently launched Nobu Hotel Barcelona has had to temporarily suspend operations due to the ongoing pandemic. Scheduled to open in early 2022, the Hard Rock Hotel Barcelona will offer a stunning rooftop terrace and pool bar, two specialty restaurants, a lobby bar with take-out service and a music bar. The rooms will have luxurious private balconies overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The property is located next to the Port Fòrum marina in Sant Adrià del Besòs, with direct metro and tram access to Barcelona city center.
