Couple apprehended after escaping quarantine hotel
Married couple who had tested positive for COVID-19 were apprehended by Dutch police over the weekend after being successful sneak out of the local quarantine hotel. According to a local report from the Dutch newspaper Het Parool, the two men were arrested on board moments before their plane headed for Spain from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
According to Het Parool’s report, the couple – a Spaniard and a Portuguese, both anonymous – left the hotel around 6 p.m. yesterday, after which the Marechaussee, aka the local military police, was alerted to the escapees. Soon after, the two were arrested on board their plane “almost silently and without violence, ”a spokesperson for the Maréchaussée told the newspaper.
This news comes in the middle of increased alarm on the other side the EU on the variant of the coronavirus Omicron which has appeared in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and other regions since its discovery last week. Although it is not clear whether this couple came down with the new variant, it should be noted that they were among some 600 passengers who had landed in Amsterdam from South Africa, where Omicron was first identified. Of those hundreds of passengers, 61 have tested positive for COVID-19, and 13 of them tested positive for the Omicron variant.
At least one of the two had tested positive for the coronavirus after landing in Amsterdam, after which they were isolated at a local quarantine hotel with other travelers from South Africa.
Marianne Schuurmans, Mayor of Haarlemmermeer where the hotel is located, Recount another local point of sale that his department “really didn’t expect people to run away.”
“There is security at the hotel, but people stay there completely voluntarily,” she continued. “Security guards advised the couple not to leave, but there was no legal reason to detain them yet. As mayor and president of the security region, I still had to organize this at the time. “
Apparently, by the time the city put the arrangement in place to hold the escapees from quarantine, the couple were already on the plane and about to take off. After local police removed them from the plane, the two were taken to a local hospital to enforce the remainder of their 40s. With a bit of luck, the incident forces other potential quarantine breakers to reconsider before escaping.
