Couple Convert 17th Century Church for Rural Spiritual Retreats in South Yorkshire | Travel News | To travel

Christina and Jasper, running International Eagle Retreat, purchased All Hallow’s Church in the hamlet of High Hoyland, near Barnsley, four years ago to create a idyllic stay not like the others. Accommodating up to six people, the church is designed for “rest, refreshment and restoration” with the interior still retaining many of the original features.

A king size bed is nestled right under a stunning custom-designed stained glass window designed by William Morris depicting the Ascension.

You will be able to watch the high-ceilinged room light up in bright colors as the sun shines through.

There is also a hot tub with salts, bubbles to fully help stressed visitors, with a full shower recently installed in the tub.

Other facilities at the luxury apartment include two single beds, a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen with fresh continental products to choose from for breakfast.

Speaking about how they became the owners of the current Airbnb church, Christina said: “She was mainly converted by my predecessor whose son was buried in the cemetery when she found out she was for sale, bought it and converted it.

“My husband and I bought it in 2017 with the view that it would be a Christian retreat center where anyone who feels pressured, overwhelmed, exhausted or life-broken can come and be cherished and loved to life.

“My husband and I both spent 20 years in parish ministry and before that I had worked almost 20 years as a nurse.

“Last year we removed some of the interior modifications to create a retreat center for those who wish to participate in a daily retreat.”

All Hallows, where Eagles’ Rest resides, has been a place of worship since the 6th century, when missionaries gathered and prayed around a cross before the church itself was built.

Today, many visitors are drawn to this secluded getaway to seek advice, coaching or reassurance during tough times, with Christina being named APCTC Life Coach of the Year in 2015.

With 4.96 out of five stars on Airbnb, the Superhosts have received rave reviews from previous guests looking for a mini break.

One customer said: “A great place to stay, with great hosts. Walks in the nearby woods are a delight and shops and pubs are within easy walking distance.

“Sleeping under stained glass windows was a glorious experience. Comfort and eccentricity, I plan to go back.”

One review reads: “Beautiful place to stay or retreat. A real quiet place … furnished with love and with everyone you could possibly need.

“We stayed for a family holiday but it would be the perfect place for a quiet weekend or a retreat.”
