Customers Complain Hidden Airbnb Fees Add Up

As travel begins to increase again, many people are choosing to book their vacation stays with Airbnb. However, there is growing concern about the amount they are being billed as customers are now complaining that their grand total is much higher than expected.

Many Airbnb customers have said cleaning fees and extra charges are to blame.

Travelers took to social media to voice their concerns, saying the cleaning fees, along with the rules for some of the ads on the site, are just excessive.

Many tenants make sure that their frustrations do not go unnoticed. A Twitter post garnered more than 200,000 likes and thousands of comments after someone tweeted “we need to shut down Airbnb” with a screenshot of an outage for a two-night stay. The image showed the rental itself was only $ 198, but the cleaning fee and service charge added to an additional $ 413.

Airbnb allows its hosts to set their own cleaning fees based on what is needed for their rental. Some hosts have said that with the additional protocols to keep rentals clean during the pandemic, these high cleaning fees are sometimes necessary. Other hosts hire outside companies to clean their properties, which can result in an expensive bill.

Airbnb clarified that they set their own service charges and taxes due to the location of the rental, adding that the host saw nothing of the money.

However, the rental site has heard the concerns. They plan to review their fees and make recommendations to travelers by December.
