Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown clears concussion protocol, active against Dolphins

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown approved the concussion protocol and will return to the roster on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

St. Brown has been training on a limited basis all week but was placed on concussion protocol after officials pulled him out of the first quarter of last week’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys after showing balance problems following a blow to the head.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said St. Brown was never diagnosed with a brain injury and took concussion tests on the sidelines, but the NFL changed its concussion protocol this season to add ataxia, coordination problems that can result from brain injury, to the list of symptoms that require a player to be removed from play.

Sep 11, 2022; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (14) scores and celebrates a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in the second half at Ford Field.

St. Brown led the Lions (1-5) with 23 catches for 253 yards in the first three games of the season, but has played sparingly due to injuries in recent weeks.

St. Brown suffered a sprained ankle in the Lions’ Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and missed the following week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. He had 18 yards in limited use the following week against the New England Patriots and had 10 throws last week against the Cowboys.

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said this week he was looking forward to the return of St. Brown and running back D’Andre Swift, who is back in the lineup against the Dolphins after missing the last three games with a sprained shoulder.

“Those are issues for defensive coordinators, so the sooner we can get these two guys back to full health, the better for us,” Johnson said. “And we’ll get back to where we started this season for sure because those two guys, you’ve got the ball in their hands and they’re dynamite.”

Lions will be without defensive starters DeShon Elliott (finger) and Charles Harris (groin) because of injuries. Substitutes Ifatu Melifonwu (ankle), Chase Lucas (ankle), Mike Hughes (knee) and Matt Nelson (calf) are also out, and defensive lineman Michael Brockers is out for the second straight game.
