Do you dream of a vacation? These places have been named the best in Australia | the islander
As lockdowns finally begin to ease in parts of Australia’s east coast, thoughts are once again turning to the holidays.
Across Australia, Airbnb hosts welcome travelers daily, and these kind-hearted regional hosts have been recognized in the platform’s first Host Awards.
Offering visitors their own private bush sanctuary, Grain Shed Retreata renovated 100-year-old grain shed on 830 acres of pristine landscape in Goomburra, Queensland, has been awarded Australia’s Best Regional Stay.
Located 90 minutes southeast of Toowoomba and on over 800 acres, hosts Neil Erskine and Bel de Bois have made the retreat fully wheelchair accessible. The property sits on a landscape called Tarragunda – an indigenous word for ‘chain of ponds’ – inspired by the local valley which is full of spring-fed waterholes.
The winning hosts were selected based on detailed Airbnb data, ratings and guest reviews, under the supervision of a panel of judges including renowned interior stylist and makeover king Steve Cordony and expert Superhost Merrydith Callegari, who sits on Airbnb’s prestigious Global Host Advisory Board.
And while the winner came from the Sunshine State, there were finalists from across the country:
The awards celebrate the best hosts, accommodations and experiences offered across the country and aim to shine a light on hosts for the incredible work they do for guests and the wider community in six categories: Best Unique Stay, Best Stay designed, best regional stay. Stay, Community Contribution Award, Host of the Year and Most Magical Experience.
Mr Cordony was impressed with the Grain Shed Retreat, noting that while the original shed had been renovated into a private bush sanctuary, the interior still celebrated its origins.
“The sheer history and authentic country atmosphere, which are showcased and celebrated with corrugated iron and timber detailing, showcase Australian country tradition. Grain Shed Retreat offers peace and seclusion ultimates for guests, including relaxing in their own private watering hole,” he mentioned.
“The most special aspect of the Grain Shed Retreat is the ability to immerse yourself in outback Australia and enjoy special sunsets and walking trails through the countryside. Definitely my choice for a real experience of staying in the region.”
National finalists in the Best Regional Stay category range from the architecturally designed Gate House Winery in Eurunderee, NSW, to the fully operational Daylesford Longhouse in Victoria, and the stunning Morning View Cabin on a former dairy farm in Sheffield, Tasmania.
Airbnb’s Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Susan Wheeldon, said Airbnb is thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize and reward hosts who have continued to go above and beyond for guests and their families. communities.
“Every day, hosts deliver unique stays and unique experiences that allow guests to experience the world in a more authentic and connected way.
“Many regional hosts on Airbnb are sharing their own homes to help combat rising costs of living and to meet mortgage repayments. In turn, these hosts are helping to drive economic growth and job creation in the Australian region. and many local businesses rely on valuable tourism dollars spent by Airbnb guests.”
