Double Carjacking + Steelers Support Women-Owned Businesses + Breweries

Yinzers, it’s Thursday! The weekend is ahead of us, but before we get there, let’s talk about everything you need to know for today, September 15.

Be careful with morning fog, followed by a veiled sun. High: 76 Low: 55.

Here are today’s top stories in Pittsburgh:

1) The only thing worse than having a carjacking happen to you once is that it happens TWICE. A Hazelwood resident reports that the same teenager hijacked his vehicle twice in a row from its parking spot in a lot next to his house. Robert Dunham says he had no choice but to return his keys as the attacker put an arm around his neck as he sat in the driver’s seat and held a gun to his head. After handing over the keys and her cellphone, Dunham walked about half a mile to a nearby RiteAid to call the police. At that moment, Dunham calls for law enforcement to catch the teenager. According to reports, the youngster may be in police custody following the carjacking.

2) With rising food prices, food banks in the Pittsburgh area are reporting their demand is skyrocketing at about the same level as at the height of the pandemic. Families struggling with inflation drove more people to fill bags and boxes with food onsite at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank warehouse. Beth Burrell, the organization’s communications director, said their current numbers are close to what they saw at the start of the pandemic. She said they usually see around 80 families in their warehouse a day, but that number has increased to 97 recently. For reference, at the start of the pandemic, they would see around 100 people a day. According to the Consumer Price Index, grocery store prices rose 12.2% from a year ago, a one-year increase not seen in more than four decades. Thankfully, Burrell shares that the food bank’s inventory is now strong and they’re doing their best to keep up with demand.

3) Allegheny County Councilor Bethany Hallam was planning an upcoming trip using popular accommodation rental site Airbnb, until she realized she had been banned from the service. Hallam said she received an email from Airbnb, ahead of her planned stay in October, informing her that her reservation had been cancelled. The email also said that going forward, she had been banned from the platform after a background check by Airbnb revealed a “criminal record match”. The Pittsburgh North Side Democrat has been very open about her criminal history, which mostly involved opioid addiction and drug possession convictions. She spoke during her campaign in 2019 about her rehabilitation and the fact that others are not as lucky as her. As an Airbnb user for years, Hallam took to social media, tagging Airbnb in a tweet that included the email she received. After her tweet started going viral, Airbnb responded. Hallam said after a few email exchanges, she was not banned.

4) The Pittsburgh Steelers and its WOMEN OF STEEL platform collaborated with PNC Bank to launch a Small Business Spotlight program. The goal of this program, which launched yesterday, is to recognize and support women-owned small businesses in the Pittsburgh area. The program will provide four small businesses with marketing support, as well as mentorship from Steelers and PNC Bank executives and PNC-certified women business advocates. The Steelers and PNC Bank worked with local chambers of commerce, including the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western PA, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Pittsburgh and the Three Rivers Business Alliance, to select the following four small businesses to launch the program: Consulting, Consulting and Open Space Wellness, Self-Care Señorita, Advance Sourcing Concepts LLC. and Cafe Tu Y Yo.

5) Three new breweries are open for business in the Pittsburgh area. You will find Back Alley Brewery in Dormont, not in an alley, but in what was once the old neighborhood building on West Liberty Avenue. The company sells take-out cans from the brewery location on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and is served at several Pittsburgh-area restaurants and beer stores . Mindful Brewing Co.a South Hills-based brewery with locations in Castle Shannon, Bloomfield and Carnegie, has relaunched its Carnegie restaurant concept Asadero by Mindful like Mindful Carnegie. The rebranding in the borough includes a full menu, new open concept kitchen and additional outdoor seating at 1001 Washington Ave. They will also host live music, trivia and a chess club. To finish, Voodoo Brewery. opened its last location on North Shore Drive between the two stadiums in late August. In addition to the “range of similar beers customers know and love at our establishments,” the North Shore location will offer seltzers and hard ciders, barrel-aged cocktails, wine and a full beverage menu. mixed.
