Eight in 10 homeowners would like to redevelop a space in their home to include a movie theater, gym, and even a room for pets

A study of 2,000 adults found that many would like a Zen room to relax in, an arts and crafts studio, and a place to play pool or darts.

If money weren’t an issue, homeowners would like an online game room (10%), a library or reading space (17%), and a pub or bar (11%) in their home.

The most popular rooms for doing a makeover or changing functions turned out to be the kitchen, bathroom and garden.

The living room, dining room and master bedroom were also strong choices for a change.

Redevelopment of a room

Research commissioned by B&Q also found that 70% have already rearranged a room in their home to play a new role, including yoga, a library and an entire room for houseplants.

Other rooms that people have in their homes include a men’s cave, a nightclub, and a craft space.

But the most popular, and a reflection of how times have changed, is a home office, which 35 percent of those surveyed own.

B&Q Director of Interiors Susie Spence said: “We have been through a period of change unlike any other – turbulent and often beyond our control.

“As we regain control of our daily lives, it’s time to once again enjoy our homes and choose the changes that will work for our ‘new normal’.

“Space in the house is precious, so if an area of the house is sitting there and it’s getting dusty, it makes sense to turn it into something that will provide more enjoyment or even a practical solution.

“Using colors, textures and shapes to divide a room can instantly create a new ‘zone’ in the home without the need for huge investments of money or time. “

Parts used for different purposes

The study also found that spaces that are no longer used just for traditional purposes include the garage (24 percent), the dining room (24 percent), and the living room (20 percent).

The biggest fitness fanatics seem to reside in the West Midlands, with more residents having an exercise room in their homes than anyone in the UK, while those in the South East are more likely to have an office.

It also emerged that one in eight thinks that indecision about what to do with the space prevents them from doing anything with it, while 13% fear their pet will “ruin it.” »A recently renovated area.

And a quarter admitted they had spaces they wanted to make better use of, but couldn’t decide how.

The greatest inspirations

TV shows, magazines, and DIY stores are the biggest inspirations for home improvement, but people last decorated a vacant space in their home an average of five years ago.

But the huge increase in home renovations in recent years has left 23% of those surveyed via OnePoll feeling more confident as a handyman and wanting to take on more projects around the home.

Lisa Dawson, author of Resourceful Living, 50, lives in York and has moved into a house with an unused playroom containing a wooden bar structure and not much else.

Soon after, it was converted into a family room, zoned to contain social space and a family sitting area – and a fully stocked bar for lodging and socializing.

The addition of tile, paint, and shelving meant the redesign didn’t cost the earth – and breathed new life into a once uncomfortable space.

Lisa said, “If the room isn’t working for you, the best way to change it is to re-evaluate the space by removing what’s in there and carefully thinking about what you want to use it for.

“Plan it right by creating a moodboard – social media and Pinterest are great for this – and include things you really like in the new style piece.

“You want the space to make you happy when you walk into it, so don’t focus on fleeting trends – go deeper into your basic style and decorate accordingly.”
