Family and friends mourn UT-Knoxville grad killed in Memphis shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) – Those who live in a Midtown neighborhood are hoping police find who is responsible for the murder of a 27-year-old woman who was found shot dead in her car.

Family and friends mourn the loss of Mallory Morgan after her life was taken too soon.

When officers showed up at the Tuscan Midtown Place apartments off Poplar last week, they found Morgan had been shot and the driver’s side window had been knocked out. She died at the scene.

According to her obituary, Morgan graduated from Farragut High School in 2013. She was also an alumnus of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

According to the university’s website, Morgan worked in the communications department at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.

Tributes on social media spoke of the energy and joy Morgan brought to so many and described her as confident and caring towards others.

Morgan was the marketing and communications coordinator for academic, faculty, and student affairs at UTHSC.

“Mallory had an infectious smile and ready laugh,” UTHSC Vice Chancellor Cynthia Russel said in a statement. During her years at UTHSC, she quickly became known on campus as an energetic, dynamic, personable, and enthusiastic person. In her role as Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs sector, she used her creative talents to improve everything we did. She exuded kindness and kindness to everyone and had such a way of making everyone’s day so much brighter. We extend our condolences to Mallory’s family and friends as with them we mourn the loss of a dear colleague and friend.

A neighbor named Renae, who has lived in the neighborhood for a decade, described what she heard that night.

“It was pretty scary because I knew exactly what had happened. I heard the gunshot, and it wasn’t typical, ‘is that fireworks or gunshot? ‘ It was definitely a shot, and it was really, really close,” she said.

WREG asked police for a motive in the case or any possible leads, but a spokesperson told us there were no new updates at this time.

Renae hopes for answers for Morgan’s family and the neighborhood.

“Detectives came here several times and we told them what we heard and saw,” she said. “They didn’t tell us anything.”
