A kitchen in an apartment in Squirrel Hill with an orb on the stove, for some reason

The hunt for apartments in Pittsburgh can be bleak. Location, square footage, price, and number of bedrooms and bathrooms are just the first set of filters that can dramatically narrow down the options. From there, you have to make decisions on what’s most important – a bedroom without an odd slanted wall running the length of the room, or a bathroom that has all the appliances in the same room?

Everyone has their own non-negotiable sticking point when hunting for apartments. For those who love to cook, having a decent kitchen is important. But Pittsburgh can be a tough city to live in when you’re looking for decent food. The housing stock is old, which can mean truly unconventional – even damn kitchens. Among the many cursed options in the city, here are five weird kitchens in apartments available to rent right now.

1. Mysterious Orb Kitchen, Squirrel Hill

Everyone salutes the Orb (see above). Why is he on the stove? Who knows. This stove, at least, is a decent size, with burners that allow multiple pots and pans to reheat food at once. In this Berkshire Hathaway ad, the refrigerator is only partially exiled this time, but when the door opens, it blocks access to the refrigerator. Hopefully it only opens to a cupboard, otherwise you’ll have to set up a warning system every time someone plans to enter the kitchen, lest an unexpected nibbler get run over.

Why use a closet for storage or clothes when you can install a kitchen? There are certainly advantages to having a flexible space in a studio. But two wide doors that open outward are not in this list of Coronado apartments. The options seem to keep the doors open all the time and waste some space in the corners near the windows, or move any furniture nearby whenever you want to close the doors. With a rug that goes straight to the sink, it also makes cleaning messier, especially if you want to use a table or kitchen island to expand the very limited counter space.

3. Kitchen Curtains, Squirrel Hill

This is a close relative of the closet kitchen, but with a slightly different flavor from this prospective management list. While there are similar issues with a lack of counter space and what appears to be carpeted flooring all the way to kitchen appliances, sliding curtains do raise some concerns. Are they obstructing the stove? Is this a situation where they are either obstructing the stove or obstructing the refrigerator? If this kitchen didn’t have curtains it would look like a lot of other cramped half-walled kitchens, which might cause some people to lower their guards and lower their standards.

4. Kitchen Exiled Refrigerator, Point Breeze

Looking through the photos of this apartment, it may appear that this is a perfectly normal Berkshire Hathaway kitchen. With careful framing and lighting, the focus remains on what looks like new appliances and a relatively spacious kitchen area. Then it zooms out to a wide shot. It’s unclear what the refrigerator did to merit exile from the rest of the appliances, or why its penance is placed so close to the bathroom, but its forced separation earns this kitchen a place on the list.

The washing machine is a nice addition to a space for eating and cooking, but interesting is not always good. This is a personal list looking for a roommate, and for the most part, this kitchen offers plenty of floor and counter space. And a lot of kitchens have washers and dryers – that’s right where the pipes are – but the choice of having the washing machine out in the open and so close to the sink and counter seems rich in occasions to soil recently cleaned clothes.
