Footballer Clive Makoni has been charged with rape in court
Clive Makoni was found in an Airbnb where he was staying at Kings Somborne outside of Winchester on September 9.
However, on the same day, the 26-year-old was scheduled to appear in Croydon Magistrates’ Court on charges of rape and two other sexual assaults.
The former AFC youth team striker Bournemouth was charged following an incident involving a woman at the London Bridge Hotel in London on August 18 last year.
It would have been his first court appearance for the case.
The footballer was found hanged, but the preliminary cause of his death was described as uncertain based on an autopsy report.
However, more investigations are underway and a full investigation is due to take place on May 17 of next year.
Tributes had previously been pouring in for the ‘talented sportsman’ of Burgess Road, Southampton.
A statement from Bournemouth University men’s football said: “Clive was a true role model who will be missed by so many.
“We are devastated to announce that former first team captain Clive Makoni has passed away.
“Clive was not only one of the best footballers BU had ever seen, he was a great man with a heart of gold.”
A statement from the Dorchester Town Football Club for which Clive has previously played added: “We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Magpie Clive Makoni.
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Clive.”
The Bournemouth 7s Festival posted on its Twitter page: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Clive Makoni, a highly valued member of our festival team.”
Meanwhile, players paid tribute during a minute of silence before a game between Fawley AFC and Tadley Calleva.
