Frustration mounts among beggars, thieves and drug addicts in Anděl in Prague

The pedestrian zone near the Anděl metro station is one of the busiest areas in the city, further exacerbated by the ongoing closure of the Na Knížecí train stop.

Besides pedestrians in a hurry, you can easily see drunk people, drug addicts, beggars and organized thieves groups.

It takes less than five minutes for a person to figure out what is wrong with that area. In the best-case scenario, someone will disturb you by asking you for a cigarette or money, and in the worst-case scenario, you could become the victim of theft.

The steps leading to the Anděl metro station are occupied by drunks and drug addicts who frequently use the nearby trees as a bathroom. The occasional boisterous bickering between them can be heard throughout the region.

The fact that the area is plagued by crime and inappropriate behavior was confirmed again this week. While surveying the area, police overheard a verbal argument between a man and two women who had a minor with them.

“The police first resolved the tension, then found out what had happened. The 30-year-old said he was standing at a streetcar stop and suddenly felt someone put their hand in his pocket. To avoid being robbed, he shouted at the boy standing near him, ”said municipal police spokeswoman Irena Seifertová.

Due to the closure of Na Knížecí since November 1, 2020, some bus stops have also been temporarily relocated (for example, in Bozděchova Street and Stroupežnicky Street), which also contributes to an unusually high concentration of pedestrians near ‘Anděl.

Repair work at Na Knížecí station is due to be completed in mid-October 2021, and representatives from the city district believe the situation in Anděl will improve eventually.

“Anděl is frequented by many people who consume addictive substances. The police and special non-profit organizations are monitoring the situation. The low number of low-threshold establishments for drug addicts in Prague is one of the causes of the problem and therefore the increase in the number of drug addicts in Prague 5 now threatens the safety of residents ”, said Petr Lachnit, city councilor. for security and crime prevention.

“An important step is to increase the number of contact centers that help drug addicts. Currently, Prague is working on a document, the Prague Capital Drug Policy Strategy (hereinafter referred to as “CPC Strategy”) for the period 2021-2027, which will describe the exact strategy of action for the region “, Lachnit added. .

According to him, the situation in Anděl is also regularly examined by the security commission, a patrol of the municipal police and the state police having been set up.

The city’s district management is currently negotiating an increase in the number of police officers for the area.
