Fury at news about Labor leader Alan Kelly’s vacation home on Airbnb

The public has reacted with fury to reports that Alan Kelly’s vacation home on Airbnb is being advertised for short-term rental.

The property is included in the Labor leader’s declaration of financial interests for 2020, although Mr Kelly is not listed as the owner.

A spokesperson for Mr Kelly said he was “only rented very occasionally and did not meet the professional income tax filing limit.”

Twitter user Niall had tweeted about some people claiming that “the family home is not wealth and should not be taxed” while claiming that “a politician’s family home is wealth”.

“The biggest scandal to come off this list is that, in the midst of a housing crisis, Alan Kelly’s second home is available for short-term rental on Airbnb,” he added.

“I’m sure there is a family in the area who would love the chance to rent it out for the long term.”

The popular Dublin Rental Watch Twitter page also weighed in, writing: “Not surprised by Alan Kelly.
