On my commute, I pass through Orange, Dutchess and Ulster counties. Every morning, I notice the price of gasoline. I find gas is generally cheapest on route 9W in Newburgh and Marlboro near the border.

This morning I was happy to see that gas had dropped below $4 a gallon for regular gas. A number of gas stations in Newburgh and Marlboro on Route 9W were selling gasoline for $3.99. Gas Buddy confirms my findings and also reports that the cheapest gas in Newburgh is at Sunoco on 17K, where gas sells for $3.95.

Gas is also under $4 in parts of Ulster County, including Kerhonkson and Accord, according to Gas Buddy.

New York drivers were paying more than $5 a gallon for regular gasoline just over two months ago. A record was set at $5,041 in New York State on June 14, 2022.

“Drivers are now enjoying gas prices that are (at least) $1.11 lower than their mid-June peak,” AAA spokesman Andrew Gross said.

However, New Yorkers were paying about $1 less at the pump a year ago, according to AAA.

Gasoline prices could rise again in New York

I’m sure New Yorkers are happy to pay about $1 less at the pump than they did two months ago. Unfortunately, AAA believes that hurricane season could lead to higher prices in the near future.

“But now we need to keep an eye on the weather as we approach hurricane season. These storms can affect prices by disrupting oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and affecting large coastal refineries,” said Gross.
