German defense minister says Putin may go further than Ukraine – EURACTIV.com

Germany must support Ukraine in its fight against Russia, otherwise Russian President Vladimir Putin may go much further than Ukraine, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht warned during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday.

“Someone who behaves like Putin doesn’t care if those corpses are on the streets of Bucha, Tbilisi, Vilnius or Berlin,” the Social Democrat minister said before the Bundestag during a debate on the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers in Kiev. suburb of Bucha.

She said the government must support Ukraine in its fight against Russia “in every possible way”. If the “Putin model” wins, she added, “none of us can feel safe anymore.”

Meanwhile, Lambrecht also stressed that Germany and NATO cannot risk getting involved in war. “We must avoid a storm in Europe with all the terrible consequences that would bring,” she said.

The defense minister has recently come under fire for his timid approach to sending weapons to Ukraine, although the government has since promised to deliver an additional 300 million.

During the debate, Johan Wadephul of the conservative opposition CDU party called on the government to drop its opposition to the supply of heavy weapons, arguing that Ukraine needs such systems to prevail.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who also addressed parliament, did not comment specifically on heavy weaponry, but said he was ready to supply more.

“Everything that makes sense and has a quick impact, we give,” he said, adding that the government is working closely with Kyiv.
