Glasgow toilets intact since the 1980s will be transformed into Airbnb

Its previous visitors have left with great success, but would you spend a pretty penny to spend the night in the Glasgow restroom?

Work is expected to begin later this summer on converting a Victorian ladies’ and men’s toilet into an Airbnb apartment modeled after a Hebridean apartment.

It won’t have windows and currently wears all the features of a 1980s convenience, right down to Tampax machines and condoms on the walls.

Its facilities are believed to have been modernized in the 1980s, but have been closed to the public for 30 years.

Designer Darran Crawford was brutally honest when he said: “Even when new people come in, they will know in a minute what it was – no doubt it was a public washroom.

“Let’s just say that this project is not one of the areas they go into in detail in architecture school.”

The owner of Linearchitecture based in Killearn is working with the owner of the premises, a real estate agent in the city, who has put together a portfolio of unusual properties.

There is a three-story tower house near Balquidder in Stirlingshire, which he bought on eBay, and a pewter tabernacle at Loch Long in Argyll and Bute.

Mr Crawford added: “We are talking about properties that are a little unloved and not very expensive.

“The toilets are at the heart of one of Scotland’s biggest tourist attractions.

“The regeneration of Glasgow and the Merchant City is progressing gradually along the High Street towards the cathedral.



The Glasgow ‘venue’ will be large enough for four to four people, with a sleeping area, kitchen, living room and toilet.

“There is currently pressure on people who use their residential premises for Airbnb, so a purpose built property could fill a gap in the market. “

Cities like Manchester have capitalized on amenities seen as surplus to needs.

One of its most popular underground hangouts is called “the Temple of Convenience”.
