Goodbye, Airbnb. Hello, Bay Area Luxury Home Exchange to Beyond

“I’m done with vacation rentals” was my recent statement when checking out a wine country home that didn’t live up to the photos. You know them: the “spacious” rooms thanks to a fishbowl lens, the good sunset cast that hides the cracked tiles of the swimming pool and the green water of the whirlpool, the non-existent images at all broken.

There’s gotta be a better way to get a cozy ambience and a full kitchen while on vacation than in an unattended rental with a mysterious duct tape on the ceiling. And there is: it’s called Home Exchange.

Anyone who’s seen Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz swap homes (and love interests) in Vacations knows home swapping isn’t new, but just because someone is willing to open up their bedrooms, bathrooms, and drawers to you doesn’t mean you really want to stay there. Walk in Home Exchange Collectionthe offering from the 30-year-old platform that just launched highly curated luxury homes thrown around the world (and also right here at home).

The high-end collection currently has approximately 300 homes in more than 35 countries on five continents. There are chic urban penthouses, whitewashed beach houses and pastoral estates – and each one has been vetted by the Home Exchange team. Additionally, each member of the platform – including, according to a press release, “notable sustainable and eco-friendly fashion designers, international consultants, interior designers, scientists, architects, artists and engineers” – pays an annual fee of $1,000 for the participation privilege, so maybe that means you won’t have to run out to replace a broken coffee maker; they are owners of means, which also gives us the certainty that they will take care of our own Nespresso machines, etc. when the time comes to trade.

Below, take a look at some of the collection’s finest vacation homes in Europe, the Indian Ocean and here in the Bay Area.

A seaside getaway on the Spanish Costa Blanca

Named after the golden sands that border the aquamarine sea, the Costa Blanca in southeastern Spain in the Alicante region is a breezy enclave to soak up Mediterranean life.

This three bedroom house near the charming artists’ village of Altea is well located for day trips to Valencia or Alicante. But with its own gardens and infinity pool overlooking the sea, plus modern, comfortable furnishings and access to a spa, tennis court and gym, you might not be in a rush to leave. your home away from home.

Walk to beach or marina for restaurants, supermarket and local bakery.

Chic loft life in the 11th arrondissement of Paris

A chance to live in modern luxury on one of the liveliest streets in Paris, surrounded by galleries, bars and restaurants? Oh dear.

Just off Rue de la Roquette and near the famous Père Lachaise cemetery (hi, Jim Morrison and Gertrude Stein!), this 5,500 square foot Bastille area is architecturally stunning with glass walls, industrial elements and a serene garden for a balanced atmosphere.

Amenities will also satisfy the most snub-nosed: the loft houses an elegant art collection, a piano and theater, and a 30-foot indoor pool.

A launching pad for adventure in Reunion

Floating among the sapphire waves of the Indian Ocean is the French republic of Saint Gilles Les Bains on Reunion Island, east of Madagascar and southwest of Mauritius. Here, an intimate two-bedroom villa awaits those looking for an authentic ambience and relaxing days at the beach.

Just five minutes from the sea, this sweet home is outfitted with local furnishings, natural materials and bohemian prints. High ceilings and sliding glass doors easily connect the interior to the exterior where there is an infinity pool and a garden with panoramic views.

Adventurers and ecotourists won’t stay locked in, however: Reunion Island is teeming with coral reefs, lush forest interior, rare flora and fauna, abundant waterfalls and one of the most active in the world. It is a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders, surfers and divers.
