Hero Dembele makes full debut as Cherries leave him late against Blackpool

SIRIKI Dembele scored his full debut for Cherries with a last-minute winner at Bloomfield Road.

In a game of very few chances, a late charge from the Dorset club gave them a 2-1 win.

The Cherries trailed for large swaths of the game, after a stunner Josh Bowler gave Blackpool the lead late in the first half.

A huge opportunity to take the lead was squandered after 24 minutes when Dom Solanke swelled his lines from the spot, before the Blackpool Bowler hit a sublime effort past Mark Travers.

With the hosts looking most likely to score in the second half, substitute Lowe equalized four minutes from time, tapping home after a cross into the box.

The game then turned into an end-to-end affair, with Cherries landing the knockout blow to Dembele.

Scott Parker’s men knew no matter the result at the final whistle they would not budge from second place, with Cherries unable to overtake league leaders Fulham while third-placed Blackburn were out of action .

Two changes have been made to the side that beat Birmingham in midweek, with Lewis Cook replacing the suspended Jefferson Lerma.

Siriki Dembele made his full debut for his new club, January signing a livewire throughout.

The opening exchanges indicated that the game was not going to be of the highest quality, with neither team allowed to ask questions in an attacking sense.

Midway through the first half, the Cherries had a golden opportunity to open the scoring from the spot, after Jaidon Anthony was bundled up in the box by Jordan Gabriel.

Cherries top scorer Solanke opted for a stuttering run, obediently placing his effort into the belly of Daniel Grimshaw, who quickly claimed the loose ball.

While Grimshaw’s stoppage sent Bloomfield Road bouncing with joy, the change in atmosphere was not reflected on the pitch.

The game remained scrappy and lacking in quality, with neither team really testing either goalkeeper.

That held true until the 37th minute when former Cherries transfer target Bowler opened the scoring with a curling effort on the edge of the area.

Blackpool probed Cherries down the left flank, the loose ball falling nicely for the Mercurial winger.

Without hesitation, Bowler let it fly, curling the ball beyond Travers’ reach and into the far corner of the net.

The first game certainly galvanized the home crowd, firmly helping his team to take control of the game.

Bowler went close again with three minutes remaining in the first half, with Travers having enough on the ball to keep it away from his goal.

Hurrying Jerry Yates came awfully close to getting something on to send him towards goal, but Cherries managed to enter the break just a goal behind.

In the second half, Cherries offered the first real chance of the half, with Philip Billing exploding after a mazy run from Dembele from the left wing.

Blackpool nearly made it two, with Bowler again proving his threat. The chaos in the box eventually led to the ball falling nicely for Bowler, who was only denied by Travers deep in, the Cherries keeper having to have both hands to send the shot wide of his goal.

Unable to produce much of their own going forward, Cherries had to thank the woodwork after CJ Hamilton hit the post with another long-range effort for Blackpool.

Todd Cantwell closed in on Cherries when he launched a diving effort towards goal, Grimshaw getting just enough to knock him over the bar.

As the game approached the final 10 minutes, Travers again had to stretch to keep it 1-0, with the Ireland international spreading to somehow deny a Gary Madine header from close range.

But it was substitute Lowe who netted the game’s second goal, coming into the box to place a Dembele cross into the back of the net and restore parity for Parker’s charges.

With the scores even, both teams played the remaining time and five more minutes at breakneck speed, trying to find a winner.

It would be Cherries who would claim the three points in the 95th minute, with Dembele capping off a strong individual performance by passing Grimshaw.
