Holidaymakers in horror at ’emergency landing’ after TUI plane returns to Manchester

Angry holidaymakers have hit out at TUI after their long-awaited trip from Manchester to Turkey was ruined.

Passengers on flight TOM822 described how they had to wait for hours at the airport, before the plane finally took off only to have to turn around and make an emergency landing.

Further delays then followed, with travelers having to shell out money for taxis to and from the airport, leaving them tired, frustrated and furious, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Hundreds of passengers arrived at the airport in the early hours of Friday morning (June 24) for an all-inclusive TUI holiday in Dalaman, with the flight due to leave at 6.10am.

Repeated delays prevented the flight from taking off before 9 p.m., but passengers soon realized something was wrong.

Fumes could be smelled on board, with passengers being alerted an hour into the flight that there was a problem with the plane and that they would have to return to Manchester for a possible emergency landing. This left many on board petrified and the plane was greeted by fire engines after landing.

However, it would still take an hour before people were disembarked from the plane and there was another wait for coaches to take passengers to hotels. Some were told they were ready to be picked up by coach around 5am for their next flight, but this never happened as people had to shell out for taxis to get back to the airport. This 9am flight was again delayed until the afternoon.

Maria Cooper, who is traveling with her companion, described the situation as a “nightmare”. She said: ‘There was no communication or anything at all.

“Everyone here has only slept a few hours, babies and young children here are really struggling.

“Honestly, you couldn’t write it. We were an hour into the flight after all the delays and had to come back.

“It’s really appalling, it’s not acceptable to treat people like that.”

Molly Charfe’s grandfather paid over £15,000 for their extended family of 13 to vacation in Dalaman. Unfortunately, due to recent health issues, the delays were too long for him and he returned home to rest.

“There was no one to tell us where to go when we finally got off the plane and finally arrived at the bus/taxi station at 11 p.m.,” she explained. “But we had to wait until 3am before a bus left to take us to the hotel.

“We were told we would be picked up at 5.30am but a coach never arrived and we had to pay £40 by taxi to take us back to the airport.

“We all cried. It was so traumatic.

Another woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There are people begging to go home, children crying, it’s absolutely awful.”

A TUI spokesperson said: “We would like to apologize to customers. Our goal is to communicate with clients as quickly as possible if there are any changes to their vacation and to offer transportation, accommodation, meals and refreshments as needed.
