Holidays 2020: the best Christmas destinations to escape with the sun and without quarantine | Travel News | Travel

Christmas is fast approaching and with England currently stranded, many are preparing to fly abroad as soon as they are allowed to do so. Currently, Britons residing in England are not permitted to travel to the UK or abroad except for an essential purpose. For some, confinement is a chance to squat down and immerse themselves in the Christmas spirit.

But for others, it is simply a break before flying abroad.

For those looking to go overseas over the Christmas period once the lockdown is lifted, has put together a list of the best destinations to escape with sunshine and, most importantly, no quarantine.

Entry requirements and quarantine

Madeira and the Azores are currently exempt from the UK’s quarantine list, meaning Britons can enjoy island vacations without facing 14 days of isolation upon their return.

Before arriving in Madeira, Brits will need to complete and submit a Travel Questionnaire 12 to 48 hours before departure.

Travelers will also need to take a coronavirus test 72 hours before travel and upload a test result.

Madeira also offers a free COVID-19 test for travelers upon arrival at the airport.

Weather situation

Being closer to Africa, Madeira is warm year round, making it a great option or a bit of sun in the winter.

The average high temperature in December is 20 ° C with cooling to around 11 ° C at night.

Although it can be hot during the day, it is best to bring a rain coat and a sweater for the evenings.

Madeira last month received the Europe’s Safest Christmas Destination 2020 award from European Best Destinations.

In Madeira, the entire month of December – known as “Festa” – is devoted to festive pleasures.

Funchal is lit up with unparalleled lights and New Year’s fireworks rival those of Sydney, but without the crowds.

There are also many Christmas markets that are full of local specialties such as honey cookies.

Entry requirements and quarantine

Gibraltar remained on the travel lanes list, meaning the British do not need to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return to the UK.

Travelers must complete an online passenger locator for COVID-19 contact tracing and a “relevant area form,” which is a legal requirement.

Holidaymakers should also notify authorities if they have visited a “relevant area” in the 14 days prior to arrival in Gibraltar.

UK is not included with European Union countries.

Weather situation

While not as hot as other destinations, Gibraltar still has an average December temperature of 14.5C and highs of 17C.

Temperatures can drop to around 12 ° C, so it’s best to pack a sweater or two.

There is also the probability of some rains.

Gibraltar has its own Christmas market which takes place regularly in December.

The market includes party supplies as well as mulled wine, tarts and other local foods.

There is also the Christmas Lights Festival in John Mackintosh Square.

This year, due to the coronavirus, the attractions will not be in their “usual format”, but the arrangements will be kept under review.

the Canary Islands

Entry requirements and quarantine

Spain and the Balearic Islands are currently on the UK’s quarantine list, which means Britons must self-isolate when they return to the UK.

However, the Canary Islands are exempt.

Those traveling to the Canary Islands who are booked in “regulated tourist accommodation” will be required to produce an official and negative COVID-19 test carried out no more than 72 hours earlier, when checking into the accommodation and downloading and activating the COVID Radar notification application throughout their stay in the islands and for 15 days after the stay.

Weather situation

The climate in the Canary Islands in December is generally very mild with an average maximum daily temperature of 22C and an average daily minimum of 17C.

There is some rain so it’s always a good idea to bring a coat just in case.

The Canaries are perfect for a Christmas break with the festivities kicking off on Christmas Eve where friends and family usually have a hearty meal.

A traditional Christmas treat in the Canary Islands is turrón – nougat with honey and almonds.

In the Canaries, most children wait until January 5 to receive their gifts when the Three Kings visit.

Entry requirements and quarantine

All tourists and short-term visitors must present a negative coronavirus test upon arrival in the Maldives.

The test and the negative certificate must be issued no later than 96 hours before departure.

All travelers to the Maldives must complete a “traveler’s health declaration form” 24 hours prior to departure for the Maldives.

The Maldives is on the travel lanes list, which means the British do not need to isolate themselves when they return to the UK.

Weather situation

December is the coolest month in the Maldives, however, it still has an average high temperature of almost 30 ° C and an average low temperature of 25 ° C.

There could be rain, but it is unlikely to warrant a rain coat.

But swimming gear is a must with seawater temperatures of around 25C.

Although it may lack festivity, Christmas in the Maldives is very special with incredible views, guaranteed warmth and impeccable hotel service.

Prices are usually higher this time of year, but it’s well worth it.
