Home of 1991 movie “My Girl” hits Florida market and becomes # 1 listing on Realtor.com
(NEXSTAR) – One of the most popular current listings on Realtor.com is likely to sound very familiar to moviegoers.
A sprawling Victorian house that served as the exterior of the Sultenfuss Residence in the 1991 movie “My Girl” has hit the market in Bartow, Florida – and has since racked up “tens of thousands of views” on Realtor.com , making this is the most clicked list of the last week.
The interest comes as little surprise to owner Sam Brunt, who bought the house in 2019, hoping to restore it to its former glory as a guesthouse once known as the Stanford Inn.
“This house is very important to our small town,” said Brunt, who said “half a dozen” people stop to take photos of the outdoors every week. And he usually doesn’t mind, as long as they refrain from snooping or running on his porch.
“If I see someone taking pictures from the outside, I invite them [up]He says, adding that he even keeps a cardboard cutout of the film’s two young stars – Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin – for people to pose with.
Being a former inn, the 7,508-square-foot home features six master suites, seven fireplaces, a commercial kitchen, and of course, the same wraparound porch that featured prominently in the movie. There’s also a “hotel-size” pool in the courtyard as well as two separate car sheds, totaling an additional 2,000 square feet.
The house currently sells for $ 675,000.
Brunt said he was initially interested in restoring the property as a bed and breakfast, but the coronavirus pandemic has turned his plans upside down.
“I hate selling it,” he said. “This is what I wanted to retire into. But because of COVID, it changed everything.”
Brunt said he had done quite a bit of work on the house since its purchase, but no longer considered converting it into a guest room. In fact, he’s completely changed course and opened a wine bar in Bartow – Stanford Wines, named after the old Stanford Inn – but he’s still hoping someone wants to finish what he and his wife started.
“I made sure I left enough meat on the bones that someone could really finish it, make it an Airbnb or a bed and breakfast, or a really, really nice residence,” he said. “I just hope someone will come and finish what we planned to do.”
