How to Live Rent-Free in an Italian Village for an Entire Year

In January 2022, most of Canada was under a huge pile of snow. So we dreamed of summers spent sipping wine in Italy while shoveling our driveways.

This dream is not so far away thanks to a new initiative from Airbnb.

“Airbnb is looking for an adventurer with a passion for hospitality to live rent-free and host in a restored Sicilian home for a year,” the company wrote in a blog post.

“The quaint traditional three-story house is located in Sambuca, which was made famous with its recent ‘1 Euro House’ campaign,” Airbnb said. According to Airbnb, Sambuca is a rural village that is home to nearly 6,000 people.

In Italy, it has become popular for some communities to offer homes in need of special attention for just €1 in the hope of generating interest and investment in the area. This Sicilian townhouse that has been given a designer makeover and is ready to welcome guests from all over the world is a shining example of how giving away real estate can have huge benefits.

The ideal candidate for the Airbnb sabbatical is someone who is committed to contributing to village life and can move to Italy for a year starting June 30.

The host is expected to accommodate guests to stay at the property for at least 9 months of the year. And, the successful candidate can keep all the money earned by the hosting list.

To be eligible, you must be over 18, speak English, commit to contributing to village life, and be available to move to Sambuca from June 30, 2022 and stay there for at least three months.
