I’m a student and I get paid to babysit cute dogs when I’m free to use a new app – it really is the dream job

A student from Ireland has told how she gets paid to keep dogs in her area – using a new app.

Laura Shannon, from Galway, sets her own rates and can earn up to €30 for daycare and €10 for a walk with the Pawshake app.

This week, she was caring for a Pomeranian named Bear.

Laura told us: “I specified that I live in a house where I can bring a dog so I can do daycare, but if that’s not what you’re looking for I can also travel and do home visits.

“You can call into the houses to feed the dogs or you can also walk the dogs.

“I set my own rates – because I’m a beginner my first 3 booking rates were cheaper but I will increase the price over time.

“For my first daycare, I set the price at €30.

Laura explains that prices vary from user to user – some people offer €10 for a ride; others suggest €40 for daycare.

To make sure you’re as passionate about animals as you say you are, Pawshake asks each user to upload five photos of themselves with furry friends.

Your profile must be validated, so after uploading ID, personal details and relevant experience with animals, you are on your way to keeping your dog.

Laura describes her biography on the app, saying: “I mentioned that I have two dogs at home in Galway, but I live in Dublin for university, so I really miss my dogs and I would like to take care of others.”

The app offers a range of pet sitting options, from walking to house sitting.

Each user can choose the option that suits him best and choose his own tariffs.

She points out the only downside being that the app takes 19% of your earnings.

She compares the app to Airbnb, highlighting how your profile is rated by dog owners, and they can see your availability when you book.

By communicating through the app, users can message owners, take and confirm reservations, and receive payments.

Laura said: “The app’s handiness is a great way to bond – once you’ve cared for a dog once, they trust you and will ask you again.”

As a student, Laura finds it easy to manage her bookings, saying: “It’s really good for odd jobs and a bit of cash on the side – especially for students. I really like it .
