Indiana man charged with fatal shooting of Trick-Or-Treater – NBC Chicago

A man was charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of a 13-year-old boy who was killed when shots were fired at a group of Halloween cheaters in northwest Indiana.

Desmond Crews, 23, of Gary is also charged with attempted murder in Sunday’s Hammond shooting that killed Thomas DeLaCruz Jr., of East Chicago, and injured another 13-year-old, the Northwest Indiana Times reported. . On Wednesday, it was not immediately clear whether Crews had a lawyer.

“He was a kid with his aunt to make candy or a spell, walking with a bunch of kids,” DeLaCruz’s mother, Jasmine Anderson, told the newspaper. “And an ignorant sick person decided to shoot some children.”

One of the cheaters told police he exchanged words with a man about 30 to 45 minutes before the shooting, which happened around 7:30 p.m. The man threatened to grab a gun and shoot him, court documents say.

The group later saw a car with five or six people inside who appeared to be looking at them. The man who had exchanged words with one of the young people got out of the car with some of the other occupants. Another man took a “firing position” and shots were fired at the cheaters, court records show.

A police officer captured Crews after the father of one of the youths chased him around the neighborhood, court records show.

A gun and ammunition were later found in a storage barrel.

Other potential suspects were under investigation, police said.
