Suffolk is full of unique places to stay to enjoy its beauty and this century-old Dutch houseboat is no different.
Located a five-minute walk from the riverside village of Pin Mill, the historic Adelaar is available to rent on Airbnb.
Built in 1906, the barge was built like a sailing ship and first started life ferrying cargoes of potatoes to market from the fields of Friesland.
After a career spanning nearly 70 years in potato transport, Adelaar was converted to a barge in 1975 and brought to the UK in 2015.
Its name in Dutch means eagle.
The ship has been extensively modernized and although it does not have TV, Wifi or electricity, the phone signal is strong and USB ports are available for charging devices.
Sitting alone, the barge offers views of the river from the wheelhouse, which serves as a lounge, and the exposed cockpit.
In addition, Adelaar is moored alongside an old abandoned wooden houseboat, which serves as a patio.
Adelaar has two bedrooms, or ‘cabins’, the master bedroom has a double bed and the second has a double bed and a single bunk bed. These cabins are compact but comfortable, with opening sliding windows and a deck hatch in the master cabin.
Equipped with hot water, the barge has a modern bathroom with shower, and modern water. While the ship’s water is stored in a tank, the water that comes out of the tap is perfectly drinkable.
The kitchen has a fridge and hob but does not have an oven, but with the excellent Butt and Oyster, Red Lion and Boot pubs very close by there are plenty of good options for hot food.
As well as pubs, grocery stores are available a short walk up the hill in nearby Chelmondiston and at the Suffolk Food Hall just down the road.
Guests are advised that you don’t have to be a sailor to stay in Adelaar, as the boat only floats for a few hours a month, and even then only a few feet.
