Last minute mid-term vacations, from UK vacations to Green List escapes
Does your half-yearly schedule seem sparse? Traffic lights, local traffic restrictions and the waterlogged forecast may have deterred many from getting a break in late May. Yet for those who have finished their week ready for a well-deserved break, there are still enticing options at home and abroad.
From a long weekend in the Scottish countryside to a five star clifftop hotel near the best beaches in the Algarve, here is our selection of last minute family vacations.
Sleep like an 18th century earl
If you’re looking for a short midweek getaway, head straight to Falkirk. Between the town and the quaint little village of Dunmore you will find The Pineapple. This 18th century summer house, built for the 4th Earl of Dunmore, is topped with the giant sculpture and adorned with the fruit. The eye-catching dome was added in 1777 when the earl was forcibly returned to Scotland after serving as governor of Virginia – his own take on the tradition that sailors put a pineapple on the pole as a sign of their return home. It can accommodate four people, with availability June 2-4 for £ 657 (landmarktrust.org.uk).
Stroll along the ‘Kent Riviera’
Find out what this increasingly popular seaside town has to offer with a midweek stay at this Scandinavian-style Victorian home. Ideally located in the center of Margate, it is only minutes from some of the best restaurants in town. Don’t forget to end a day at the beach by making your own s’mores in the property’s fire pit in the back garden. It can accommodate six people, with availability June 2-4 for £ 789 (airbnb.co.uk).
