Local clothing designer to showcase ‘Memphis’ collection at New York Fashion Week
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A lifelong dream has come true for a Memphis clothing designer to showcase a collection named after her hometown at New York Fashion Week this month.
Ayeshia Smith, 33, said the entire collection was inspired by a bold fabric called Memphis that nods to ’80s and’ 90s fashion.
“It’s kind of a big deal right now,” Smith said. “I wanted to create something that identifies me and bears the name of my hometown. So, I was like it would be perfect.
Smith started designing clothes when she was just 13 and by the age of 25 had started her own business: AyeshiA Clothing.
She was designing jewelry for a company in the San Francisco area but decided to return to Memphis when the pandemic struck.
“It made more sense for me to come home,” Smith said. “It worked for me because it’s my full time job.”
Smith said a large fashion showroom and Plitz Fashion Marketing invited her to New York Fashion Week after spotting her clothes on Instagram.
She decided to work with Plitz and says her collection will include 13 different looks.
“I started buying all of my fabric in February,” Smith said. “In fact, I started the collection in June and finished in mid-July”
“You can see and meet so many people,” Smith said. “I hope I can collaborate with someone who wants to get my collection back and work with me to develop my brand. ”
Smith said she would eventually like to grow her brand globally and have stores everywhere.
“I pray that the right person will see my job and want to work with me,” Smith said.
New York Fashion Week runs from September 8 to 13.
