Long-haul COVID comes to Nashville for treatment | New

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – An Alaskan woman is in Nashville for treatment after she said she contracted COVID-19 three times.

The woman, who News 4 only identifies as TJ, said the virus has impacted her life in almost every way.

“I’ve had COVID three times incredibly because for some reason my body doesn’t make antibodies,” TJ said.

TJ, a woman in her 40s, said she first contracted COVID in March 2020 and then again last October when she went to South Dakota to be a bartender.

“It was risky, but I needed to work. They were allowing people to work who had COVID, and they didn’t let other workers know we were so exposed, ”TJ said. “The one I almost died of.”

The third time was in January 2021. Her doctor told her to get the vaccine.

“I got the vaccine, the Pfizer on March 12, and then I had a bad reaction and couldn’t walk,” TJ said.

TJ said she had nerve pain, weakness on her right side and tremors in her hand.

“Instead of telling me they didn’t know what was wrong, they just wanted to think of it as a mental health issue because I once suffered from depression and anxiety,” TJ said. “It was to the point where I was like I couldn’t fight COVID and fight my doctors. “

After visiting several doctors in Alaska, she began to do her own research and found help at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has been seeing various doctors there for nearly a month.

“I do physiotherapy twice a week. I had the neuropsychologist yesterday. I had a scan of my chest yesterday. I have an MRI today, ”TJ said.

TJ is also part of the COVID-19 long-haul group where other people with similar issues meet once a week.

Dr Jim Jackson is a psychologist at VUMC and leads the group.

He said they were helping the group in various ways.

“They have mental health issues, physical issues and they often feel like unicorns. We try to understand them and not just understand them, we also try to provide people with skills that they can use to function a little better cognitively.

TJ said the smallest chores are a struggle for her, including the shower. She said she was once a world traveler, but now has to take several vitamins and medications every day.

“I don’t want to be like this forever,” TJ said.

TJ stayed at an Airbnb, but had a car stolen in Nashville just weeks before officially moving there.
