Mesa Bakery donates to support another bakery in Ukraine

One Mesa Bakery Works to Support Another bakery in kyiv, Ukrainewhich works to distribute free bread to people in need.

The Bakehouse in Ukraine says donations from Bread Proof in Arizona helped make his mission possible.

“It was so chaotic for me because I didn’t know what to do,” said Anna Makievska, co-founder of The Bakehouse.

Makievska crossed the Polish border after fleeing Ukraine with her two daughters. Her youngest at the time was just two months old.

“I didn’t even pack the full stroller for my baby,” she said.

Their warehouse was bombed when the Russians first invaded the country. Now, says Makievska, her employees continue to produce breaks and pastries.

“It’s artisanal – the process is pretty much hands, mixers and the oven, so it’s not a big factory,” the baker said.

She continues to support the bakery from afar without receiving any income herself. His friends and workers are offering a free break to those who are suffering and struggling in Ukraine.

“Began to bake free bread for people in need, who defend Kyiv, for refugees, hospitals,” Makievska explained.

In Mesa, thousands of miles from the war-torn city, Proof Bread owner Jonathan Przybyl helps raise money for his bakery. Proceeds from some pastries go to Makievska’s shop in Kyiv.

“The amount that started coming into the account, I was absolutely surprised,” Kakievska said. “It’s amazing that people are ready to support bakers.”

This Easter season, Anna hopes things will soon get better for her people and her family.

“We are not only strong, but we are optimistic, so Easter is a very important way for us to come together and have hope,” Makievska said.
