Minnesotans are ready to hit the road for a summer trip
Whatever you consider the start of summer, Minnesotans seem ready to do it with big Memorial Day travel plans. AAA Minnesota predicts the busiest holidays for travel in the past three years. Volume may approach pre-pandemic levels.
“Based on these Memorial Day travel forecasts, the summer travel season is off to a flying start,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA at A press release. “People are more comfortable traveling now than at any time in the past two years, and travel bookings reflect that.”
She adds, “Flight, hotel and cruise bookings for Memorial Day weekend are twice as strong as the holidays last year and that momentum will likely continue through the summer.”
The forecast is for 39.2 million people to travel, most by car, up about three million people from 2021, or around eight percent.
AAA Minnesota says travelers can take a hit in the wallet. “AAA finds average lower airfare is 6% higher than last year…Midscale hotel rates are up about 42%.” Those who rent cars may find rates down 16% from a year ago.
“Inflation, including high gas prices, is creating headwinds, but that hasn’t dampened the desire to travel so far this year,” said Meredith Mitts, public affairs specialist at AAA. . “Many may consider cost-cutting measures to offset expenses, such as traveling shorter distances, staying at a cheaper hotel, camping, or cutting back on shopping, dining and entertainment.”
Thursday, May 26 could be the busiest day for air travel, says AAA. Thursday and Friday will likely be busy on the roads.
